Macfadden is seeking a Graphic Designer to support USAID’s Office of Transition Initiatives (USAID/OTI) in Washington, DC. As part of the Program Office’s Outreach Team, the Graphic Designer will support staff throughout the office, including helping teams tell their stories in a visual and easy-to-digest way, and creating products in support of program management and analysis. The Graphic Designer will collaborate closely with USAID offices and with colleagues in U.S. Government agencies, the humanitarian community, academic, and private sectors. The Graphic Designer’s work is critical to communicate and articulate the value of USAID/OTI’s work to audiences in the U.S. and overseas, the general public, U.S. Congress, and other partners through illustrative and informative graphics.
Essential Functions
In areas of leadership, the Graphic Designer is responsible for advancing Design and Informational Products by providing vision, organizing tasks, and identifying opportunities for engaging colleagues.
- Design products such as infographics, one-pagers, illustrations, publications, presentations, and marketing materials that articulate the value of USAID/OTI’s work to audiences in the U.S. and overseas.
- Advise and actively engage with senior management and key stakeholders on design products in DC and remotely to teams overseas.
- Analyze problems and formulate strategic design solutions in a timely manner to meet tight deadlines with changing and sometimes competing priorities.
- Provide clients with design options and guidance.
- Create interactive and animated graphics.
- Translate data into infographics.
- Learn and follow USAID’s branding guidelines for public products.
- Export files for on screen and print purposes, coordinating with outside print vendors when needed.
Country Lead/Support:
- Provide deliverables and technical solutions for country teams and offices within OTI.
Technical Facilitation:
- Provide support and participate in technical solutions. Engage individuals and office groups on how to successfully use visualizations to more effectively communicate information.
- Expand in-office capacity for visual and multimedia products by seeking out new software, strategies, and technique.
- Implementation of data visuals, and use of graphics in outreach and advocacy
- Other related duties as required.
Education/Experience:
- Degree in Graphic Design, Fine Arts, or similar discipline required.
- 1 - 2 years providing experience in print and digital design/graphic arts
Minimum requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree with 1-4 years of work experience; or
- Less than BS/BA with 5 years of relevant experience
- MS/MA/MB with 3 years of relevant experience
- JD/ABD with 2.5 years of relevant experience
- Ph.D. with 2 years of relevant experience
Required Skills:
- Strong design sense and understanding of design elements, such as color, typography and layout
- Ability to work closely with a team to develop and provide effective fit-for-purpose visual and media solutions, which involves being able to synthesize complex and text-heavy requests
- Strong prioritization skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat
- Proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint
- Experience with photo editing
- Ability to work independently as well as collaborate effectively on a team
- Ability to work in high-pressure situations occasionally exceeding normal business hours with the potential for domestic and overseas travel
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Preferred: User Experience (UX) Design
- Preferred: Video skills (shooting and editing)
- Preferred: Social media experience
- Preferred: International experience and foreign language skills.
- Preferred: Copy-editing skills
U.S. Citizenship is required; selected candidate must be able to qualify for a government sponsored security clearance.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds.
